NATiVE AMERiCAN HERiTAGE

Picture
Yes I am a full-blooded Native American. I belong to the tribes of the Omaha(Um'on'hon) and Navajo(Dine') people. I love being Native, I learn a lot about my heritages. It is all so interesting to me. Im getting older and older and it seems that I don't know a lot from my heritages, and I want to know more! So what i plan on doing is to learn my native tongues and how to write in what would have been my original language. It will be a long journey but I know that if I want to save my language it could be done. I take a lot of pride in being Native American, I think that no matter what culture you are from you should represent it to the best or more that you can. I would love to learn about other peoples cultures, not from books though, from experience seems like the best way.

i WAS A POW WOW PRiNCESS

Picture
It was pretty awesome when i was crowned pow princess. I didnt know how to act and what to do. I mean I've always been dancing in Pow Wows but to be a princess and represent your crown with pride and to do it at your best, it was easy but so much fun. It was hard though to go to different Pow wow's that were out of town. We had no money for the gas so I was mostly doing local dancing. I would do it again too. There were so many mermories for me in traditonal dancing.

* Blue star crown and red and white sash belong to my cousin Neosho Porter she titled pow wow prince for ANNAC..
*Blue crown with a red, orange, yellow and white star belongs to my sister in 2003. She was princess for the Indian Club
*The crown in front of my sisters belongs to my mom, when she was princess for the Indian club a long time ago.
*The purple crown and sash belongs to me, when I was crowned pow wow princess ANNAC from 2005-2006.

NAVAJO HERiTAGE

This rug to my left is traditionally hand woven in the navajo community. Every rug that is made has love and care in each stitch. My grandma Mable made rugs, I never saw her make one but she had the tools to make one, it took time, and she had a lot of it. What some people would do is make these rugs of all diffrent sizes and sell them in town to people, mostly tourist. They would also sell jewelry, mostly turquoise, some silver bracelets and necklaces, beaded work that is really beautiful.

OMAHA BACKROUND

I grew up being around my mom and the native american heritage. I've always remembered going to ceremonies, pow wow's, hand games, and other festivities. My mom is very traditional, I remember her always dressing me and my sister up to dance in pow wow's. I thought it was fun to dance in pow wow's, the best thing I've ever done in my life was earn a princess titlle. My mom also tought me a lot about my omaha heritage. She was always telling me o respect my elders and do for them because they aren't young like me any more. So that is what I did, I respected my elders and tended to them. I also learned some ways that I still go by today, mostly spiritual things.
